As entrepreneurs, we tend to have many of the same qualities in common. We are often perfectionists…..we tend to procrastinate…and we think we know it all – and worst of all – don’t need help. When I first started my business I was guilty of all of the above. I am very detail-oriented and didn’t want to put “just anything out there”. After all it was a reflection of me, my brand, my company….blah, blah, blah.
Now please do not misunderstand. I believe that when it comes to running an online business, perception really is everything. We get so caught up in striving for perfection, that we don’t realize we are wasting valuable time getting our business, our packages and our services out into the marketplace. It is so easy to get caught up in the details.
Case in point, I was sitting at my desk and admit to spending almost two hours just trying to get into a client’s WordPress dashboard, all the while berating myself for not being able to find her password in my files. I was also annoyed that I hadn’t set up a separate user name and password for me to use – so this whole situation could have been avoided. Finally, I had to concede defeat. So dramatic right? Concede defeat – but that is what it felt like. I has giving it my all and was “defeated” by a password reset. I finally gave in, reset the password. Why didn’t I do that in the first place? Because I was hellbent and determined to “figure it out”. And oh the shame of having to admit I couldn’t find it…I mean, what kind of virtual assistant was I? Ever do that to yourself? Make a total Mount Everest out of a little pile of dirt? That was me today.
Once I “conceded defeat” and sent the password reset request, she rang me to confirm that it was me and we had a laugh about it. She caught me up on some cool things coming up for her in her business, which will ultimately result in additional business for me. Then I grabbed the leash and took Buddy for a walk, ending up at my local bakery. After chatting with the owner for a bit, she asked me what I did for a living (I am sure she wondered as I am there 2-3 times per week for coffee and a cupcake) and when I told her I was a blogger – she offered me a free cupcake. So here is my plug for Elite Pastries. Awesome pastries, cookies and my personal favorite – cupcakes!
Oh and the point of this post – how to hit the reset button. Stop turning little things into big issues. It’s a time waster and will exhaust you. If at first you don’t succeed, ask for help! Yes, that can seem hard to do at times, but think about how much you could accomplish with a little help every now and then. Then get up from your desk, your laptop….and take a walk. Think about all you have to be grateful for, including the simple things like a walk with your dog, or a cupcake. There is no such thing as perfection. It’s a facade. Just always strive to do your best and know that will always be enough.
